The five habits that hold new Vaughan players back โ and the simple fixes that turn a frustrating first month into fast, fun improvement.
Almost every new player makes the same handful of mistakes โ and the good news is that every one of them is easy to fix once you know what to look for. Here are the five we correct most often in our beginner Learn-to-Play program, and exactly how to fix each one.
1. Standing too far back
New players instinctively hang around the baseline like it's tennis. But pickleball is won at the kitchen line. The single fastest way to improve is to get to the non-volley zone and stay there. Practise moving up behind your return every single point.
2. Swinging too hard
Power feels good and loses points. At the beginner level, consistency beats pace every time โ the player who simply keeps the ball in play wins the vast majority of rallies. Shorten your swing and aim for control first; speed comes later.
3. Ignoring the soft game
The dink โ a soft shot that arcs just over the net into the kitchen โ is what separates players who plateau from players who keep improving. It feels boring to practise and it wins games. Spend ten minutes of every session dinking.
4. Poor paddle-ready position
If your paddle is down at your side when the ball comes, you're already late. Keep it up in front of your chest, ready, between every shot. This one habit alone will win you points immediately.
5. Forgetting to have fun
Seriously. The players who improve fastest are the ones who stay relaxed, laugh off mistakes, and keep playing. Tension is the enemy of good technique.
Fix these five and you'll jump a full skill level in a month โ no new athleticism required, just better habits.
