You do not need a $250 paddle to start. A plain-English guide to weight, grip size, and shape โ and why trying before buying beats reading any spec sheet.
Walk into any pickleball conversation and someone will try to sell you a $250 paddle. You don't need one to start โ and buying the wrong expensive paddle is worse than buying a sensible affordable one. Here's what actually matters.
Weight is the big one
Paddles run from about 7.3 to 8.5 ounces. Lighter paddles give you control and quick hands at the net; heavier paddles give you power with less effort but can fatigue your arm. Most new players are happiest in the middle โ a 7.8 to 8.0 oz 'midweight' paddle.
Grip size matters more than people think
A grip that's too big is a common cause of tennis elbow and a loose, unstable stroke. As a rule of thumb, smaller hands want a 4 to 4 1/8 inch grip. When in doubt, size down โ you can always build a grip up with an overwrap, but you can't shrink one.
Shape: start standard
Elongated paddles add reach and power but shrink the sweet spot โ great for experienced players, punishing for beginners. A standard-shape paddle has the most forgiving sweet spot, which is exactly what you want while you're learning.
The single best way to choose a paddle is to hit with a few. Specs on a page tell you almost nothing about how a paddle feels in your hand.
That's why we bring a range of loaner paddles to every lesson โ trying several weights and grips over a few sessions tells you more than any review. We'll give you honest, brand-neutral advice before you spend a dollar. Book a first private lesson and test-drive a few.
