Pickleball for Seniors: Why It's the Perfect Sport After 55

Low-impact, deeply social, and genuinely good for you โ€” here's why pickleball has become the go-to sport for players over 55, and how to start safely.

Some of the happiest, most dedicated players we coach are over 55 โ€” and it's no accident. Pickleball might be the best sport ever designed for staying active later in life. Here's why, and how to get started the right way.

It's gentle on the body

The court is a quarter the size of a tennis court, so there's far less ground to cover. The underhand serve and lightweight ball keep strain off the shoulder and elbow. You get real cardiovascular exercise, balance work, and hand-eye coordination โ€” without pounding your joints.

It's genuinely social

Pickleball is doubles by default, and the small court means you're chatting between points. For a lot of players, the community is the whole point โ€” it's a standing social date that happens to keep you fit. That social side is a big reason people stick with it for years.

It's easy to learn

Most people are rallying within their first session and playing real games within a few. You don't need a racquet-sport background or any particular athleticism to start โ€” just a willingness to have fun.

Starting safely

  • Warm up gently โ€” a few minutes of easy movement before you play.
  • Wear proper court shoes with lateral support, not running shoes.
  • Start with the soft game; you don't need to sprint or lunge to enjoy it.
  • Learn good technique early so you build habits that protect your joints.
It's never too late to start. We've taught players who picked up a paddle for the first time in their seventies and never looked back.

A patient first lesson is the gentlest way in. Come solo for a private lesson, or bring your spouse or a friend for a semi-private session and learn together.
